Libro

In this work we show a study about the music of Spanish cinema of the 1960s, with
special attention to those musical expressions that illustrate female identities. To do this,
and after the establishment of a theoretical framework that determines the context of
this paper, we present an analytical study of the aesthetic and film music in Spain of the
sixties. This task takes into account, on the one hand, the different musical aesthetics,
according to the heterogeneous film music styles in the decade, and, on the other hand,
the analysis of a representative selection of soundtracks. Moreover we propose an
analysis of the meaning that music acquired throughout the union of image and sound
surrounding the female characters in the Spanish cinema of the cited period. To do this,
we offer a research that takes into account not only formal aspects, but the value of
music to represent gender roles of the sixties in Spain. In this way, our project aims to
confirm that the soundtrack music, among other functions, is able to recreate semantic
and identities values. Thus, this study wants to provide an audiovisual and
musicological approach from an analytical, iconography, anthropological and semantic
reading of film music according to the social and historical context of Spain in 1960.
